To make room on the 53-man roster, the Browns placed rookie cornerback Charles Gaines on injured reserve and designated him to return. He suffered a hamstring injury in the third preseason game. Gaines, a sixth-round draft pick, will be eligible to return to practice in Week 6 and play in Week 8.
The Browns now have a maximum of 10 players on their practice squad after signing offensive lineman Garth Gerhart and undrafted rookie defensive end Dylan Wynn to it Monday.
Davis joins starting quarterback Josh McCown and backup quarterback Johnny Manziel on the active roster. Manziel missed the final two preseason games because of soreness in his right elbow and forearm caused by tendinitis.
