Browns QB competition: Does the winner decide the team’s direction or vice versa?

Related Topics: Kevin Stefanski, Browns, Joe Flacco

The Cleveland Browns have their fans concerned about the upcoming season. With the old saying “if you have two quarterbacks, you have zero” being doubled with the Browns QB competition between four quarterbacks:

  • Joe Flacco

Cleveland’s defense might be ready to carry the load, but without a solid option at quarterback, the 2025 Browns season might be all about 2026 and beyond. At a simple level, each quarterback makes sense as the team’s starter sometime this season:

  • Pickett was the first QB acquired, was a 1st round pick and learned in his one year with the Philadelphia Eagles
  • Flacco led the team to the playoffs two seasons ago, has a cannon for an arm, knows the offense and has the trust of the veterans
  • Gabriel cost the most for the team to acquire this offseason, has HC Kevin Stefanski’s stamp of approval and is coming off a successful, long college career
  • Sanders is exciting and accurate, with many talent evaluators believing he belonged in the 1st or 2nd round instead of falling to the 5th

In many ways, the Browns have to make one decision (which they’ve likely made) before making the decision on who is their starting quarterback: Does the best quarterback win the job or does the team’s plan/direction decide who wins the job?
