Browns notebook: Johnny Manziel rests sore, stiff throwing elbow, but coaches expect him to play in preseason opener Thursday

BEREA: A sore and stiff throwing elbow has temporarily stalled the progress of Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel.

Manziel didn’t throw passes Tuesday during the 11th full-squad practice of training camp because he experienced discomfort and fatigue in his right elbow.

But coach Mike Pettine and quarterbacks coach Kevin O’Connell said they expect Manziel to play when the Browns host Washington at 8 p.m. Thursday in the preseason opener. Manziel will work with the second-team offense after veteran quarterback Josh McCown and most of the other starters play for what Pettine expects to be “roughly” a quarter.

The 22-year-old Manziel was on the field in full uniform for Tuesday’s practice, though the only balls he tossed were with his left hand.
