Top Tigers in 2012 Tilts

The Clemson Tiger baseball team will host NC State this weekend. After a 7-8 loss against Georgia Wednesday night, Clemson is now 19-15 for the season overall. So they will definitely have to play at their best to defeat #17 NC State in this upcoming three game series. The Tigers have played consistently so far this season; also many of their players have received honors and high praises including Richie Shaffer, Jon McGibbon, and Daniel Gossett.

Shaffer is a junior out of Charlotte, North Carolina and he plays third baseman as well as first baseman. This season alone Shaffer has been named the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association “Hitter of the Week”, the ACC “Player of the Week” three times, and tied a Clemson record for having three doubles in the Tigers’ March 7th game against Holy Cross.

Like Shaffer, Jon McGibbon is no stranger to accolades. This first baseman/outfielder hails all the way from Lindenhurst, New York. Only in his sophomore year, McGibbon has already shown himself to be a heavy hitter for the Tigers. He helped lead the Tigers to a 12-5 victory over Furman University on April 10th of this year. According to an article from clemsontigers.com, “Jon McGibbon went 3-for-4 with a homer, double, and a career-high five RBIs”.

Last but not least we have Daniel Gossett. Gossett is a right handed pitcher from Lyman, SC. Gossett actually had the option to play for the Boston Red Sox after graduating from James F. Byrnes High School, but he declined and is now midway into his first season as a Clemson Tigers. Gossett is known for striking out his opponents, allowing a very low number of hits, and not having many walks called against him; no wonder he was wanted in MLB.

With well over a month left in the regular season the Tigers, as a team, have more than enough time to increase their number of wins. And with Shaffer, McGibbon, and Gossett playing phenomenally, that does not seem like such a fair fetched goal.
