Tajh Boyd to the Clemson Ring of Honor?

Tajh Boyd has undoubtedly helped get Clemson headed back in the right direction. He has led the Tigers to 3 straight 10 win seasons for the first time in their history. He is talented but should he be put into Clemson’s Ring of Honor.

Boyd has broken over 50 passing records at Clemson. He’s the only Tiger QB to reach over 10,000 career yards passing and has over 100 TD passes which is over twice as many as the previous record holder, Charlie Whitehurst. Boyd also has the highest QB rating of anyone to have attempted more than 15 passes. Stats suggest that he should be in heavy consideration but what about other traits.

Wins go a long way to being placed in the Ring of Honor. Boyd currently has 31 wins at Clemson. That puts him 1 behind the career leader for the Tigers, Rodney Williams. He has helped them reach the best 3 year win total in school history. In the win column he has done enough to get in.

How has he managed in big games? Boyd has helped Clemson win over some stiff competition. The teams he has lead the Tigers to victory against include Florida State, Auburn, LSU, Georgia and an ACC Championship win over Virginia Tech. But there is one big win missing. A victory over in state rival South Carolina.

Not only did he fail to get a win over the Gamecocks but he has been very unimpressive in his 3 starts versus them. In those 3 starts, he completed only 51.37% of his passes while having only 2 TDs and 5 interceptions. He averaged just over 163 yards and .667 TDs per game against the in state rivals. This is well below his career average of 295 yards and 2.6 TDs per game. To come up short in this rivalry is uncommon to Tiger QBs. Charlie Whitehurst, Cullen Harper, and Woodrow Dantzler have multiple wins against the Gamecocks. The only QB in the Ring of Honor, Steve Fuller, went 3-0 against the Gamecocks. Boyd has none.

Boyd has had a good career. He has helped get the Tigers back to being a team that is taken seriously throughout the country. He has done great things both on and off the field and will continue to do so. He’s made an imprint on the program. But as far as being in the Ring of Honor he comes up short. The Ring of Honor is reserved for those who are beyond great. He’s close but has come up just short.
