Pitt baseball to hire ex-Red Devin Mesoraco as volunteer assistant, per report

Former Reds catcher Devin Mesoraco, the team's first-round draft pick in 2007 who spent parts of eight seasons with Cincinnati, will be hired as a volunteer assistant coach for the University of Pittsburgh baseball team, according to a report Friday via Twitter by D1Baseball.com's Kendall Rogers.

Mesoraco, 32, reportedly returned to his home in Pittsburgh in March 2019 after the New York Mets put him on the restricted list instead of granting him his release. Mesoraco had asked the Mets to release him, and appeared to be considering all options - including retirement - with the exception of a trip to the minors.
