Phillip Ervin homers over batter's eye as Cincinnati Reds win spring game in Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS – Phillip Ervin is out of minor-league options, which makes him a very likely candidate to make the Opening Day roster, but he’s playing like he has a point to prove.

Ervin clobbered a solo homer over the batter’s eye to open the fifth inning against Chicago Cubs right-hander Trevor Megill. The center field wall is listed as 415 feet away from home plate, so Ervin certainly barreled the pitch a long, long way.

It was Ervin’s second homer of the spring and it’s the second straight year he’s hit well in spring training. He added an infield single in the first inning and flew out to the warning track in right field in the second inning.
