Cincinnati Reds center fielder Nick Senzel missed the final two weeks of the season because of a broken toe in his left foot and the fracture will cost him some additional time in the offseason.

Senzel underwent surgery to repair the sesamoid fracture last week, The Enquirer learned. He’s expected to be ready for the start of spring training, but surgery was necessary after a subsequent exam showed his toe wasn’t healing as expected.

The Reds kept Senzel past Friday’s nontender deadline, guaranteeing him a contract for the 2023 season. Senzel is eligible for arbitration for the second time in his career and could command a salary above $2 million, according to MLB Trade Rumors’ projections.
