Most relievers wind up in the bullpen because they don't have more than two pitches, making it difficult for them to turn over a lineup. Cincinnati Reds right-hander Michael Lorenzen has at least six.
Lorenzen hasn't pared down his arsenal since joining the bullpen last season, either. This year, he's thrown five different pitches -- a four-seam fastball, a sinker, a change-up, a curve, a slider and a cutter that he picked up only last year.
He doesn't use them all in every outing, but has been able to ride whatever's hot coming out of the bullpen.
