Hitting home runs with 1st-round picks are key for Cincinnati Reds, NL Central teams

There are a little more than two weeks remaining until the 2020 Major League Baseball Draft, which will look different than any previous draft.

The draft was shortened from 40 rounds to five rounds. Most of the draftees’ salaries will be deferred over the next two years and undrafted players can sign for a maximum $20,000 bonus. It’s unknown how the new rules will affect most of the draft class, but a popular prediction is that more high school players will choose the college and junior college route.

The changes were a cost-saving measure amid the novel coronavirus pandemic, but don’t underestimate the value of hitting a home run with a top selection.
