Cincinnati Reds lose game and Amir Garrett, but avoid worse fate

LOS ANGELES – Just about everyone involved feared the worst when Austin Barnes ripped a line drive up the middle that hit left-hander Amir Garrett in his left hand.

Cincinnati Reds manager Bryan Price couldn’t see where Garrett had been hit, and saw only the 6-foot-6 rookie falling to the ground and flopping onto his back. Catcher Tucker Barnhart’s view was obstructed, and had to register the severity of the impact by the sound it made.

“It just scared the hell out of me, to be honest with you,” Barnhart said. “When he hit it, I got blinded.
