Cincinnati Reds drop series to the struggling Chicago Cubs with blowout loss

The Chicago Cubs were a winless team for 11 consecutive games before playing the Cincinnati Reds this week and they’re leaving town with a winning streak.

It was a dud from a Reds team in the thick of a playoff race, ending their three-game series with a 7-1 loss Wednesday at Great American Ball Park. It was the Cubs’ third win in August after trading nine of their best players ahead of last month’s trade deadline.

Adrian Sampson, who made his first big-league start since Aug. 3, 2019, held the Reds to one run in four innings Wednesday.
