Hector Perez has made only one relief appearance in his Major League career, but the Cincinnati Reds wanted to take a flier on his potential.
The Reds acquired Perez, a 24-year-old right-handed pitcher, in a trade with the Toronto Blue Jays on Friday for a player to be named later or cash. Perez was a starting pitcher for most of his minor league career, but he projects as a reliever because of his high walk rate.
Perez was rated as the 37th-best prospect in the Blue Jays' farm system by FanGraphs. His scouting report includes an above-average spin rate with a lot of vertical movement on his fastball.
