Cincinnati Reds' 4-part plan for staying in playoff race without top player Matt McLain

SAN FRANCISCO — The news hadn’t reached the clubhouse by the time most of the Cincinnati Reds got to the ballpark Monday for their game against the San Francisco Giants.

Matt McLain, the Reds’ most valuable player since he debuted May 15, had just gone on the injured list with an oblique injury and with no timeline for a return – with barely a month left in a playoff race.

“Damn,” said Will Benson, who first heard the news when he was asked about it by a reporter before Monday’s opener of another big series.
