Outlook bleak for colleges if no fans attend games at UC, Miami

When men’s soccer players at the University of Cincinnati gathered remotely for a Zoom meeting with athletic director John Cunningham, they weren’t quite sure what to expect.

Maybe it was an update on the coaching search after their head coach resigned a month beforehand. Perhaps, it was more news related to the novel coronavirus pandemic.

Players were stunned when Cunningham announced the school was discontinuing the program, effective immediately. Cunningham said he made the decision after he took a long-term look at the athletic department’s budget and the pandemic wasn’t solely to blame.
