The University of Cincinnati fell short of its third straight 100-point basketball game, but another monstrous blowout will have to do.
The No. 12-ranked Bearcats smoked Coppin State 97-54 Thursday night at Northern Kentucky University. UC (3-0) had the ball with under 20 seconds left and could have tried a 3-pointer, but coach Mick Cronin had walk-on player John Koz dribble out the clock. Coppin State fell to 0-3.
"I'm the son of a coach," Cronin said. "When you're up 43, you don't try to rub it in. At least, I don't."
UC still has never posted three consecutive 100-point games, not during the Oscar Robertson era, not during the Kenyon Martin era and not in the 12-year Cronin coaching era.
