White Sox sign former Tigers catcher James McCann

The White Sox strengthened their catching depth Friday, agreeing to terms on a contract with James McCann, who handled the catching for the Tigers for most of the last four seasons.

McCann, 28, threw out 27 of 74 potential base stealers in 2018 for a 36 percent success rate and has earned the nickname “McCannon” for his throwing prowess. But the Tigers didn’t tender him a contract two weeks ago after he earned $2.375 million in 2018.

McCann started 112 games at catcher last season and caught 987 1/3 innings. He could seize the majority of the catching duties from Welington Castillo; either way, the agreement assures the Sox of two catchers with plentiful major-league experience.
