The White Sox didn't select anybody in the major-league portion of the Rule 5 Draft Thursday, but they did lose pitcher Blake Smith.
Smith, a 28-year-old right-hander who was a former second-round pick by the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2009, was scooped up off the White Sox Triple-A roster by the San Diego Padres.
Smith came to the White Sox in a trade last spring with the Dodgers where Rick Hahn's front office sent left-hander Eric Surkamp to Los Angeles.
Smith has yet to make his MLB debut and finished last season with a 3.23 ERA in 44 Double-A and Triple-A games, sporting three saves, a 1.
