Sox To Honor Minoso’s Historic Debut

Sixty-Four Years Ago Today

On May 1, 1951, Minnie Minoso became the first black player in White Sox history. All he did that day was step to the plate for the first time in a Sox uniform and hit a home run–his first in the major leagues–into the center-field bleachers at Comiskey Park against the Yankees. Minoso batted third and played third base during the Sox’ 8-3 victory.

Tonight in Minneapolis White Sox players will pay tribute to the anniversary of Minoso’s historic Sox debut. They will wear wristbands adorned with Minnie’s No. 9 and the word, “Gracias.
