Shuster shock: White Sox opener strategy goes sideways in 5-4 loss to Tigers

The Chicago White Sox’s experimental “opener” strategy backfired spectacularly on Wednesday night, as the Detroit Tigers pounced all over Jared Shuster in the first inning en route to a 5-4 victory.

The Tigers wasted no time getting on the board. Gleyber Torres kicked things off with a two-bagger to left. Andy Ibáñez followed with a bloop double, and Riley Greene singled them both home, giving Detroit an early 2-0 lead. After walking Spencer Torkelson and getting a strikeout, Dillon Dingler singled to plate Greene, extending the Tigers’ advantage to 4-0 before the Good Guys even had a chance to bat.
