Notre Dame's unlikely tradition: the lacrosse bagpiper

SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Notre Dame junior Eddie Glazener's final warm-up before Saturday's NCAA lacrosse semifinal against Denver University will take place in a tunnel at Philadelphia's Lincoln Financial Field.

It is there that Glazener will play a few bars of "Amazing Grace" to prepare for what he finds the most nerve-wracking part of his game day.

His role as a starter in the Irish defense may be of paramount importance, but it comes after his performance as a bagpiper in a Notre Dame lacrosse ritual that has taken place for 20 seasons.

Glazener is the latest in a line of uniformed Irish lacrosse players who have piped their teammates onto the field with the inspirational anthem, "Scotland The Brave," the best-known piece of music for the instrument.
