Jose Abreu is going back to the Midsummer Classic.Abreu was elected the starting first baseman for the American League All-Star team, becoming the first White Sox player to be elected as a starter since Frank Thomas more than two decades ago.
Abreu is the White Sox lone representative on the AL All-Star roster. It’s the first time he’s been named to the team since his rookie year in 2014.
Abreu fended off Houston Astros first baseman Yuli Gurriel to win the vote, though had voting lasted much longer, the results could’ve been different. Abreu is in the midst of an extended slump that has knocked him from his former status as the clear-cut highest-performing first baseman in the Junior Circuit.
