Not quite one-third of the 51,000-plus who crowded into Comiskey Park for Bat Day 1972 were still around when Dick Allen was summoned from the White Sox clubhouse.

Allen, who had been resting for the first time all season in the nightcap of a doubleheader, got some of the chili dog he'd been eating on his uniform as he hastily pulled it on. He grabbed his massive club of a bat and headed out to face Sparky Lyle.

Bottom of the ninth. Two men on. Yankees up by two, needing just two outs for a split.
