Column: Is baseball nearing a return? All we can do is hope for the best after the latest up-and-down negotiations.

After a face-to-face meeting in Arizona on Tuesday between Major League Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred and players’ union leader Tony Clark, Manfred said the two had agreed on the “framework” of a deal that would restart the 2020 season.

According to reports, the fourth and latest proposal from MLB is for a 60-game season beginning July 19, with 16 of the 30 teams making the postseason. Players would receive full prorated salaries and the union would waive its right to file a grievance.

Despite speculation on Twitter, there was no official agreement. But the union figures to make a counterproposal in the vicinity of 60-70 games that should suffice given Manfred’s optimism from Wednesday’s talks.
