Column: High expectations are only one of the unknowns the Chicago White Sox are dealing with during a summer camp of intrigue

That was the word Monday from manager Rick Renteria, who is taking a novel approach to the 60-game season.

“I’m going to assume we’ve already played 102 games and are in first place and we’re trying to hold on to that spot,” Renteria told reporters Monday in a conference call.

So forget those pronouncements from general manager Rick Hahn that this is still a “multiyear endeavor” and that 2020 “was going to be sort of that first year of transitioning from the rebuild into that competitive stage.”

The Sox already are talking like contenders, so we can also assume they’ll be good enough to make the postseason and maybe even do some damage there.
