Column: ESPN makes clear how it views ‘Sunday Night Baseball’ by bringing back Alex Rodriguez and Matt Vasgersian. Just be grateful for the clarity.

There are two ways to look at ESPN’s announcement Tuesday that it is bringing back Matt Vasgersian and Alex Rodriguez as the voices of “Sunday Night Baseball.”

“SNB” is more talk show than ballgame as far as ESPN is concerned. What happens on the field tends to be the backdrop rather than center stage.

Vasgersian can be a solid play-by-play man. But had ESPN wanted its best announcer working “Sunday Night Baseball” on TV, it would have replaced Vasgersian with new Chicago Cubs voice Jon “Boog” Sciambi.

Another thing for which to be appreciative: Sciambi will continue doing “SNB” games with Chris Singleton for ESPN Radio in addition to picking up 130 or so Cubs games a year as Len Kasper’s successor.
