Chicago White Sox playoff tracker: Magic number remains 2 after a pair of rainouts — and they’re now 5 games behind the Houston Astros for the No. 2 seed

Their magic number for clinching the division remained two after their game Wednesday against the Tigers in Detroit and the Cleveland Indians’ home game against the Kansas City Royals both were rained out.

The White Sox and Indians are scheduled to play five games in Cleveland starting with a doubleheader Thursday. The Sox need one victory to win the division.

Despite having all but sewn up their second consecutive postseason appearance, the Sox still have plenty to play for down the stretch: playoff seeding.

MLB returned to its 10-team playoff format — five teams from each league — this year after expanding the field to 16 for the pandemic-shortened 2020 season.
