Jared Kelley was ranked as the No. 12 prospect in the entire draft by MLB Pipeline.
Then Day 1 of the draft, 37 picks long, came and went without Kelley hearing his name called.
“Yesterday, we were like, ‘Man, what’s going on?’” Kelley said while talking with White Sox general manager Rick Hahn and scouting director Mike Shirley on Thursday.
It’s a perfectly reasonable thing to ask, considering the glowing reviews Kelley, the Gatorade National Player of the Year, received in various scouting reports. Baseball America ranked his fastball as the best of any high school arm in the draft.
