Wild Walkthrough: Transition defense has led to goals-against for Minnesota

When possession changes in a basketball game, and the defensive team quickly transitions to offense, there's a common call-to-arms the new defensive team can be heard yelling.

“Stop the ball.”

In hockey there is an analogous, quite similar concept applied to the same game situation.

“Stop the puck.”

And just like on the court, when there's no speed bump to slow down the offensive team on the ice, it forces the new defenders to play shadow defense, never establishing position, and at risk of allowing Grade-A scoring chances.

The Minnesota Wild, a traditionally strong defensive team, was tied for 23rd in the NHL in 5-on-5 goals per 60 entering play on Monday.
