Mandel: Takeaways from the initial College Football Playoff selection committee top 25

Tuesday night’s initial College Football Playoff rankings were about as non-controversial as I can recall. Teams 11 through 25 barely differed from the AP poll. Teams 1 through 10 definitely did, but mostly in the form of common sense corrections.

It’s almost as if 13 people sat in a room, carefully evaluated each team’s schedule and came to an informed consensus. Novel concept!

Here are my main takeaways from the rankings:

1. Head to head still matters.

After last year’s Penn State-Ohio State controversy, as well as several other instances over the past three seasons, it would be understandable to think the committee is no longer emphasizing its purported head-to-head tiebreaker.
