June 14 | Host Russia rolls past Saudi Arabia to jumpstart 2018 World Cup

The 2018 FIFA World Cup kicked off with a bang on Thursday, with host Russia defeating Saudi Arabia 5-0 in the opening match.

Russia started their goal-scoring spree early in the first half when Yuri Gazinskiy scored with the first shot on target after only 12 minutes. Just before halftime, substitute Denis Cheryshev slotted in another goal to put Russia safely ahead. The second half saw Russia capping their solid start with a header in the 71st minute and two further goals in stoppage time.
