Habs Prospects Notebook: Joni Ikonen flashing offensive skill

Call it the Mikael Granlund effect. In 2009-2010, Granlund demolished the U18 scoring record in Liiga, ushering in a new wave of Finnish talent into the country's top tier of men’s hockey.

Teenagers in the Liiga from 2000-2009 were rare, and almost never scorers. Even Mikko Koivu was a sub-0.2 points-per-game scorer. The highest scoring player of the era was Tuomo Ruutu, at 0.41 points per game (after era adjustment)—a mark that Finnish teenagers since Granlund routinely meet and eclipse. In fact, every 18-year-old forward who played both a regular shift in the Liiga since 2010 and at least one game in the NHL has scored at least 0.
