The start of every NHL season is always about bold predictions, and about two weeks ago, during The Athletic’s launch party in Toronto, I made one about the Edmonton Oilers superstar Connor McDavid and his prospects for the upcoming year that might have sounded farfetched at the time.
My theory was if McDavid stayed healthy, he had a chance to do what Wayne Gretzky also did in his third NHL season – win the NHL scoring title by a ridiculously large margin over whoever finished second.
McDavid and Gretzky are completely different talents, with completely different playing styles and hailing from completely different eras, but the one common element is that nothing seems to ever faze them, and no challenge ever seems too great.
Duhatschek: Like Wayne Gretzky before him, Connor McDavid's biggest breakout may come in Year 3
