Why Japanese star Seiya Suzuki chose the Cubs over other high-profile suitors

MESA, Ariz – Japanese star Seiya Suzuki had plenty of team suitors this winter, once he committed to playing Major League Baseball in 2022. But after meeting with the Cubs on Monday, he had his agent cancel other meetings scheduled later in the week.

“They’re obviously a really very good team,” Suzuki said Friday, through his translator Toy Matsushita. “And their passion to get me on this team was something that really took me by heart. So, obviously, very excited to be here.”

The Cubs held an introductory press conference for Suzuki, their biggest addition since Jed Hoyer took over as president of baseball operations, on Friday.
