Who’s on first? No one, if David Ross can help it

Leave it to the Cubs to use one of their few weaknesses against the opposition.

It doesn’t take advanced scouting to know that Jon Lester struggles to hold runners on base. The veteran lefty had this vulnerability exposed during the 2014 wild card game while with the Oakland Athletics and continued to show issues throwing to first base after signing with the Cubs.

But Lester’s battery-mate David Ross has helped neutralize that issue and he displayed how early in Friday night’s 1-0 victory over the San Francisco Giants. Ross lamented how Lester didn’t seem on his game early, letting the leadoff man reach in each of the first three innings.
