Sanity triumphs as Big Ten basketball makes Michigan-Michigan State a protected rivalry

NEW YORK CITY — Amid the relative absurdity of the Big Ten hosting its Media Day festivities in Manhattan, some sanity triumphed this morning.

The conference confirmed that the league will increase its annual men's basketball schedule to 20 games, a shift from the previous 18-game schedule. The change will go into effect starting in 2018-19.

More notably, for Michigan and Michigan State fans, at least, is that as part of the new league schedule, three traditional rivalries will be “protected” and assured to play twice per year.

Michigan vs. Michigan State is now guaranteed to be a full home-and-home series every season.
