What a problem to have … too many good players, not enough roster spots.
The Chicago Tribune’s Mark Gonzales and MLB on FOX’s Ken Rosenthal have been tossing around rumors that teams (mainly the Braves) are interested in trading for Cubs reserve outfielder Matt Szczur, whose hitting .342 this spring and is out of minor league options.
It’s unlikely that the Cubs move Szczur before Opening Day, so not to give him away via waivers, I think he’ll end up on the roster with Tommy La Stella heading to Triple-A Iowa (sorry, not sorry). Though this leaves Javier Baez as the only real reserve infielder, I just can’t see a Szczur departure unless the Cubs get something back for him.
