The Cubs have talked endlessly this season about how important the little things are to them, those things that don’t get all the attention or even show up in a box score.

When the book closes on Matthew Boyd’s season, know there’s more to it than just a nice ERA.

“The guy fields his position and controls the running game very well,” center fielder Pete Crow-Armstrong said of the Cubs’ All-Star lefty. “He’s very masterful at that.”

The lefty starter climbed atop a Cubs all-time leaderboard Saturday, picking off a pair of Nationals base runners to reach 10 on the campaign, a new single-season franchise record dating back to 1901.
