Letters from camp: Joe Maddon tests out some new slogans

Cubs manager Joe Maddon is known for his pithy slogans, but when the Cubs held their spring training opening press conference on Tuesday, it was president Theo Epstein with the line of the day.

“We’re just going to walk before we squat,” he said.

Epstein was referring to Cubs maybe-catcher/definite-left fielder Kyle Schwarber, who’s expressed his desire to get back to catching after missing almost all of last season with a knee injury. Epstein said Schwarber was being evaluated by a team doctor on Tuesday, and they expected him to be cleared to catch. Schwarber said he’d be wearing a knee brace all year.
