DENVER – Cubs right-hander Javier Assad has had a unique pitching and travel schedule of late, sent down and called back up between each of his last three starts, as the Cubs navigated a doubleheader and right-hander Jameson Taillon’s groin injury.

“He’s gotten better each time out, and we’ve needed it,” manager Craig Counsell said before the Cubs’ 4-3 win agianst the Rockies Saturday. “We missed him, but we got him back at a time when we had some pretty significant needs.”

Assad, who missed most of the season with a strained left oblique, held the Rockies to three runs through six innings Saturday, in his fourth start of the season.
