CHICAGO – Neither starting pitcher in Game 1 of the NLDS has had impacted the contest with his arm as much as Chicago Cubs catcher David Ross has.
Ross picked off his sixth base runner of 2016 in the third inning of a scoreless game not long after throwing out leadoff man Gorkys Hernandez, who was trying to steal second base in the first inning.
After Conor Gillaspie singled to open the third, the Cubs employed their unconventional bunt defense for pitcher Johnny Cueto. Anthony Rizzo turned in his first baseman’s glove for a regular one while second baseman Javier Baez covered first base.
