Cubs sign RHP Trevor Williams

About two weeks ago, I wrote an article here headlined “Why haven’t the Cubs signed this guy yet, Part 5: Trevor Williams.”

It took 12 days after that article was published for my wish to come true:

The Cubs are in a agreement with pitcher Trevor Williams on a one year deal, sources tell ESPN.

Williams has spent his whole career with the Pirates. 31-37 in 94 career starts, 4.43 ERA.— Jesse Rogers (@JesseRogersESPN) January 30, 2021

Here are the reasons I gave in my January 18 article for signing Williams:

Because he’s still relatively young — turns 29 in April — and per Fangraphs he hasn’t lost velocity, still throwing his fastball around 91 miles per hour.
