MIAMI — The Cubs recalled top prospect Matt Shaw on Monday before opening a three-game series against the Marlins. In a corresponding move, they designated utility player Nicky Lopez for assignment.
The Cubs sent Shaw down to Triple-A after his first 18 major-league games in order to get him back on track offensively. He was hitting .172 at the time. They wanted him to work on his posture, trim down his leg kick and get back to driving the ball with confidence.
In his last nine Triple-A games, Shaw hit .
