Cubs promote top prospect Nico Hoerner to fill hole at shortstop

SAN DIEGO — Addressing their immediate need at shortstop, the Cubs are promoting Nico Hoerner—last year’s first-round draft pick—from Class AA Tennessee.

Javy Baez, Addison Russell and Class AAA shortstop Dixon Machado are all injured.

Hoerner, 22, hit .292 in 288 minor-league at-bats this season, including .284 with three homers in 268 at-bats for Tennessee.

He will join the Cubs in San Diego, where they open a series Monday night against the Padres.
