ST. LOUIS – Cubs president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer was self-critical of one area of his offseason in particular.
“Our bench was struggling,” Hoyer said this week. “I don’t think I did a good job building the bench in the off season.”
Hoyer solved that issue in just one trade deadline move: acquiring super utility man Willi Castro from the Twins.
“We’ve added a player to protect us in what we thought would be a little more difficult time of the season for our guys,” manager Craig Counsell said.
