WASHINGTON – Cubs baserunner Pete Crow-Armstrong put Nationals third baseman José Tena in a bind as he danced off the bag.
Tena had fielded Carson Kelly’s groundball with plenty of time to check the runner at third base and still get off a throw to first. But there was Crow-Armstrong, hopping back and forth in the basepath.
If Tena fired across the diamond, Crow-Armstrong would surely take off toward home. But he would also win in a foot race to third. Tena froze with indecision for too long, finally lunging toward the base.
