PITTSBURGH — In the Cubs’ first matchup with a division opponent this year, they outscored the Pirates 20-7 over three games and won the series 2-1.
The Cubs (19-13) lead the National League, and the Pirates (12-20) bring up the rear. The Cubs’ weekend opponent, the Brewers, were tied with the Reds for second place (16-15) going into their respective games Thursday.
“Playing the same division team, I think that’s very important, especially winning the series,” designated hitter Seiya Suzki said through an interpreter Thursday after hitting two home runs in the Cubs’ 8-3 win.
