Cubs outfielder Kevin Alcantara underwent surgery Thursday to repair a sports hernia, the team announced.

Alcantara, 22, has appeared in 13 major-league games over the last two seasons and gone 5-for-21 in that time. He’s ranked No. 5 among Cubs prospects by MLB Pipeline.

As right fielder Kyle Tucker heads into free agency, Alcantara could figure into the Cubs’ plans for replacing his production — barring a reunion — next season along with fellow top prospect hitters Owen Caissie and Moises Ballesteros.

The Cubs did not immediately announce a timeline for Alcantara’s recovery.
