The Cubs are closing in on a deal to acquire right-hander Edward Cabrera from the Marlins, according to multiple reports, which would deliver a splash in what has been a mild offseason for the team.
Sources cautioned Wednesday afternoon that the deal had not yet crossed the finish line. The proposed return package was not immediately clear.
The Cubs have been seeking difference-making starting pitching since even before this past trade deadline, when they judged the price to be too steep to acquire a marquee starter with multiple years of control.
