Jake Arrieta Day is usually one where the Cubs don’t have to worry about their end result. But that wasn’t the case Wednesday. Well, kind of. They had to worry, but it like a half-hour sitcom, it all worked out in the end. Arrieta showed a little weakness on the mound, but the Cubs were still able to eke out a 9-8 win at Busch Stadium, taking two of three from the St. Louis Cardinals to finish a 4-5 road trip.
It was also the Cubs’ 23rd consecutive victory with Arrieta on the mound.
Describe the game in three words: Every run counts
A promising start: While the Cardinals got to Arrieta in the first inning (which hasn’t been done in almost a full year), by hitting two singles and scoring a run, the Cubs exacted their revenge in the second.
